Overview
Babesia IgG & IgM antibodies measure serum immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M antibodies directed against Babesia species using standard serological methods. A venous blood sample is required for analysis.
This test may be clinically useful in the evaluation of suspected babesiosis, particularly following tick exposure in endemic regions. IgM antibodies may indicate recent immune response, while IgG antibodies may reflect past or ongoing exposure. It may also be considered alongside other tick-borne infection testing where co-infection is suspected.
Results are interpreted in relation to symptom history, timing of exposure, travel history and other laboratory findings. Reviewing IgG and IgM patterns together enables practitioners to contextualise immune response patterns and discuss findings appropriately with clients.
