Overview

Folate - Serum measures circulating folate levels in a venous blood sample. The test provides a quantitative assessment of serum folate concentration at the time of collection.

This test may be clinically useful in contexts including megaloblastic anaemia, malabsorption syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, depression or preconception planning. Folate status is also relevant in individuals with high alcohol intake or those taking medications that affect folate metabolism.

Results are interpreted alongside full blood count, vitamin B12 levels, dietary intake, medication use and gastrointestinal history. Reviewing folate levels in context enables practitioners to assess adequacy and discuss findings appropriately with clients.
